Chores for 11 year olds: getting ready for middle school
Eleven is the year before many kids move to middle school, with more homework, more freedom and less time. Chores now are less about the house and more about getting ready to run their own life.
What an 11-year-old can handle
The American Academy of Pediatrics list for 11 and 12 year olds is almost an adult list: cleaning the kitchen, changing bedsheets, unloading the dishwasher, doing and folding laundry, scrubbing toilets and cleaning the bathroom, washing the car, cooking a simple meal with supervision and watching younger siblings with an adult present at home.
Most 11-year-olds can do all of it. The question is no longer "can they?" but "how do we fit it in?", and how to keep their motivation as they start wanting more independence.
Daily chores for an 11-year-old
- Keep their room tidy and their bed made
- Unload the dishwasher
- Clean the kitchen after one meal: dishes, table, counter
- Take out trash and recycling
- Look after the pet completely
- Prepare their school bag, clothes and lunch
Weekly chores for an 11-year-old
- Do their own laundry: wash, dry, fold, put away
- Change their bedsheets
- Clean the bathroom, toilet included
- Cook one simple meal for the family, with you nearby
- Vacuum and mop a shared room
- Help wash the car
- Help a younger sibling with their own chores

Chores as preparation for middle school
Middle school asks kids to manage time, materials and deadlines on their own. Chores are a low-stakes place to practice exactly that:
- Let them plan the week. Give them the list of weekly chores and let them choose the day for each.
- Let small consequences happen. If the sports kit isn't washed, it isn't washed. One uncomfortable practice teaches more than ten reminders.
- Teach a few "adult" skills on purpose: reading a recipe, using the washing machine, making a shopping list, setting an alarm.
Keeping a preteen motivated
At eleven, many kids find sticker charts childish, but they still love progress they can see: levels, streaks, unlocking something. A points system with rewards they choose works well: extra screen time, a later weekend bedtime, choosing the family outing, saving up for something bigger. KUDOZ turns chores into quests with XP and levels, which is why it's built for kids up to 13.
And keep some chores together: cooking with an 11-year-old is one of the easiest ways to keep talking as they grow up.
